Winter Flight at Foshay

Room 13LA Presents: Winter Flight, which flies at The Foshay Learning Center Thursday, December 15th. Featuring The FOCUSfish Flying Fish performing acts of high-flying daring-do as part of the first aerial performance in South Central LA. The event marks the beginning of FOCUSfish's initiative to bring cutting edge fitness to economically disadvantaged children. Also Performing is Foshay's band, led by Mr. Holland's Opus award winning band leader Vince Womack, and an Art Installation and Live Art by acclaimed Room 13 LA. Hope everyone has started the school year on a positive note, it’s a tumultuous time in LAUSD, but when is it ever calm?

If there are colleagues in visual or media arts that are not receiving my updates, please give me their contact info so I can add them to my list. With so many transitions, it’s hard to keep up an accurate distribution list.

Banked Tuesdays at LACMA and Getty

•I’ve arranged with LACMA to coordinate some of our Banked Tuesday meetings with their Evenings for Educators (4 evenings total), with an optional salary point. To obtain the salary point, register in person at the first meeting, October 4. You must attend all four Evenings for Educators to earn the salary point.
•We will be meeting at LACMA West, 5th floor (old May Co department store) for our Banked Tuesday meetings just prior to the Evenings for Educators. Of course you can still participate in the Evenings for Educators without the salary point.

Reminder that you will need administrator approval to leave your campus before the dismissal bell. I will send you an agenda about a week before the meeting if you need to have documentation for your administrator.

Secondary Instructional Guide
•The direction of PD’s this year will be through the instructional guide - vetting the instructional guide for usefulness, and aligning course descriptions. My goal is to have a few regional groups of art teachers that can meet throughout the year and make this document a useful tool for better instruction. If you are unable to make the first Tuesday meeting at LACMA on October 4, but are interested in this work. I won’t be posting the Instructional Guide on the website until we have more input among the art teachers.

Join Room 13 LA for a showing of our newest artwork and live music by a Jazz Combo led by Mr. Holland’s Opus Award Winner Mr. Womack. Room 13 returns to the Brewery to bring you paintings, design, jewelry, photography, found sculpture, glass work and much more. We will also host live collaborative art making for adults and kids of all ages. We will be joined by our Southern California Room 13 brethren from Eliot Middle School and John Muir High School.




Open from 11AM to 6PM each day the Art Walk itself is spectacular with access to over a hundred art studios, food, drink and music at the biggest art colony in Los Angeles.

Edison is located in an unincorporated part of L.A. County South Central L.A., Local District 7. We have an excellent school the lowest suspension rates and have gained 65 API points in the last three years. We are a QEIA school and elective classes are normed around 30 students to a class. Edison operates as a family; we appreciate the arts and take care of our teachers.

Our students matriculate into the new South Region HS #2; one of the small schools has a visual and performing arts focus. Having a program here for the students to matriculate into would be ideal. Edison is in need of an instrument/music teacher and an art teacher, someone who could help with the Consortium referrals and help us to attract School for Advanced Studies students in the areas of Art and Music. Our former Art teacher was part of our GATE team and was certified.

Choreographer looking for visual artist:
I am a choreographer and creating an evening length work - it is an Urban Latin Dance Theater work - contemporary dance - for the Ford Amphitheater - but also to tour in the next few years. The debut is the Ford but I would like to make sure to have a clear and strong visual design of the work so that when we begin touring with it - and perform outside of the Ford - it maintains this visual strength as in the debut performance.

There are already very clear set/prop pieces and I really just need someone with a strong visual sense and expertise to tie it all together and construct the set piece that will go around the musicians. We have a fabulous costume designer who is building some of the smaller props, and some of the props are already built/constructed - like chairs and three industrial reels.

I would love to speak to you more about the work - and what this would all look like - we don't have a huge budget because we are a non-profit, but I will definitely pay you - I would like to talk about cost as well.

Septerhed Speaks

As can be expected, at an art gallery, there’s a constant flux of artists that step in and out our front doors. Some are well known, while others are just finding their footing; some have lofty aspirations, others are more modest, while others still are better able to verbalize their perceived awareness of the impact and position their art holds in an ever-changing contemporary art scene.

As we have gotten to know Sept better and better, we discovered he is a young artist not only of many mediums, interests, and goals, but one who is just as prolific in talking about his art (and art in general) as he is in producing it.

For his upcoming show at Hold Up Art, "Subversive Holiday," Septerhed is generating a fresh new collection of works based around four original characters: the wolf, the toxin (pictured below), and the geohead family, composed of magnet heads and dead table heads. He envisioned these to embody the four stages and emotions of our existence that he notes most inspire him, namely life, death, love, and hate.

Otis College of Art and Design Names Milnes as new Assistant Chair, Digital Media.


Kerry Walker, Provost of Otis College of Art and Design, is delighted to announce that Kathleen Milnes has been appointed Assistant Chair of Digital Media, effective July 1, 2011.
Kathleen has worked for over thirty years in the creative industry as a senior executive, program director, and educator with experience in production, government, industry associations, corporations, and non-profits. She has held positions at the Motion Picture Association of America, the California Film Commission, and Paramount Pictures, among others. An Adjunct Assistant Professor of Digital Media at Otis since 1999, Kathleen developed and continues to teach a required two-semester senior seminar entitled "Life in the Real World: Career Planning and Personal Management," and has authored companion essays on creative occupations for the annual Otis Creative Economy Report. The consulting firm she founded in 2004, The Entertainment Economy Institute, serves the creative sector's current and future workforce through research, education, and partnerships, including providing students access to industry professionals. She has been the featured speaker at numerous education conferences, including the California Arts Project's Courage Creativity Conference.
